Excerpt: My hypothesis is that the structure of modern society makes it possible to form autopoietic subsystems. The way in which this occurs is determined by the functional differentiation of the social system. It seems to be the case that not all functional systems have reached the degree of autonomous differentiation that allows autopoietic self-reproduction. As a logical, lawful compulsion is not apparent, we must therefore consider from case to case whether and at what level of development functional systems not only reach a certain autonomy and capacity for regulation but also produce the elements of which they consist.
