Structure is destiny: An interview with Humberto Maturana.
The Family Therapy Networker 9(3): 36–37, 41–43.
Discusses the work of H. Maturana and its implications for family therapy and presents the transcript of an interview with Maturana. Maturana is a biologist whose experiments with frogs led to the proposition that the organism is an informationally closed system that never takes in information from outside in any direct way. The implications of Maturana’s thinking for family therapists is that there is no absolute, objective family. For each member, there is a different family, and each of these is absolutely valid. By accepting this, the family therapist refuses to take sides with anyone. Maturana also argues that perception and illusion cannot be experientially distinguished. Some family therapists agree with Maturana’s views while others argue that Maturana is opposed to active intervention.
